Elina Katara & Eija Hakkola | Island (building) | 2002 | Island was part of ArtGenda 2002 in Hamburg. In a project called Pontonpark the participating artists made proposals for floating objects situated in the canal area of Hamburg's harbour. Island was built out of materials found mostly from the surrounding areas. Styrofoam was collected from a building site nearby and placed in four big bags constructed of strong string net. On top of these joint "garbage bags" a wood and rope structure was built so that it would adjust to the movements of water. Fabric and soil was then placed onto this surface. The soil was shoveled from the banks of the canal. Tough weeds collected from the surrounding areas were planted on the island as well as two birch trees which had been brought along from Finland.

Elina Katara & Eija Hakkola | Night-time Cinema | 2002 | red curtains, video projection on a display window. Night-time Cinema could be viewed only from the street outside the gallery. It was a show for sleepless wanderers who happened to pass by. During daytime the window was covered with a red curtain. At nights the curtain was open and the cinema in operation. On the white screen one could see shadows of two hands rapidly painting constantly changing dream visions. Once an image was ready, the hands wiped the surface and started a new image on top of the remains of the old-one. The cinema was a combination of painting, animation and shadow-theatre.

Elina Katara & Tamares Goh | Salt Coats | 2001 | salt, water, iron cymbals, glass tank, copper pipes. The installation situated in a black, round cellar space. Glass tank was filled with strong salt water. Water ran through thin copper pipes forming varying rhythms as the drops hit the iron cymbals. Since water was saturated with salt, iron soon became rusty. The exhibition space was filled with fluctuating rhythm and smell of rust.

Elina Katara & Sanna-Mari Pirkola | Hands | 1998 | video projection on a table, white table cloth, two chairs. Viewers can sit at the table and watch animated video episodes projected onto the surface of a white table cloth. Hands appear in the video and surreal, dream-like things begin to happen.
