Island,
2002
In collaboration with Eija Hakkola
Island was part of ArtGenda 2002 in Hamburg. We participated in a project
called Pontonpark in which artists made proposals for floating objects
situated in the canal area of Hamburg's harbour. Our idea was to build
an artificial island from materials found in the surrounding areas.
The task was quite demanding as there's a strong tide and the island
was also supposed to support possible visitors. We used styrox as pontoon
material. We collected it from a building site nearby and placed it
in four big bags constructed from strong string net. On top of these
joint "garbage bags", we built a wood and rope structure which
was designed so that it would adjust to the movements of water in the
canal. The shape of the structure resembled a spider's web. On this
surface, we placed fabric and soil which we shoveled from the banks
of the canal. There we planted tough weeds collected from the surrounding
areas. We planted also two birch plants which had been brought along
from Finland.
Kino Yöllisiä Kuvia, (Night Visions Cinema), 2002
In collaboration with Eija Hakkola
We were offered a possibility to make an exhibition in Gallery Profounders
in Museokatu, Helsinki, on a very short notice. We decided to build
an installation which could be viewed only from the street outside the
gallery. Kino Yöllisiä Kuvia was a night-time cinema show
for sleepless wanderers who happened to pass by. During daytime the
window was covered with a red curtain. At nights the curtains were open
and the cinema was in operation. On the white screen one could see shadows
of two hands which were quickly painting changing visions and stories
from dreams. Once an image was ready, the hands wiped the surface and
started a new image on top of the remains of the old-one. The cinema
was a combination of painting, animation and shadow-theatre. As a starting
point we used our own dreams and worked together intuitively without
too much pre-planning or talking.
Night-time Map, 2001
The installation Night-time Map was my graduation work from Glasgow
School of Art. It was part of the MFA graduation show in Tramway, Glasgow.
My own dreams with strong images of landscapes were the starting point
for this installation. I wanted to create a map of the places I dreamed
of. I used sea salt for its preservative and glittering, snowlike qualities.
I built sugar top mountains out of the salt. I created a map of black
felt blanket which I coated with salt water. As the water evaporated,
the salt stains remained forming an unconscious map and landscape. On
top of this landscape there was a video projection of hand written text
which slowly glid over the felt blanket. The text depicted landscapes
from my dreams and happenings in those places. Also part of the installation
was a black and white video, Wallpaper. In this video a person is sleeping
on a bed. As she turns, the pattern of the wallpaper turns into a swarm
of butterflies fluttering their wings.
Salt Coats, 2001
In collaboration with Tamares Goh
Salt Coats was a sound and smell installation situated in a black, round
cellar space in Glasgow. We filled a glass tank with strong salt water.
The water was dripping through thin copper pipes forming varying rhythms
as the drops hit iron cymbals. Some of them had their convex side up,
the rest their concave side up collecting the water. As the water was
saturated with salt, the iron soon became rusty. The whole space was
filled with the sound of drops hitting the cymbals and the smell of
rust.

Divers, 1998
In collaboration with Jussi Saivo
Divers was an installation situated in a basement room in Gallery Rajatila's
former exhibition space in Tampere. The cellar was divided in two rooms.
The first one was filled with moving boxes, furniture and other personal
belongings from somebody's home. In the centre, there was an old iron
bed. A video projection of a person diving slowly under water was projected
onto a metal grid which acted as the bottom of the bed.
The floor of the second room was covered with growing grass. Above the
grass white sheets were hanging from drying ropes. Together with worksite
lamps they formed a labyrinth where visitors could wander about. The
smell of soil, grass and clean sheets was strong. On the last sheet
there was again a video projection of another diver.
Hands, 1998
In collaboration with Sanna-Mari Pirkola
Hands was a video projection on a table covered with white table cloth.
There were also two chairs facing each other around the table. Viewers
could sit on the chairs and watch little episodes happening on the surface
of the white cloth. Hands appeared in the video projection and surreal,
dream-like things began to happen.
